Amnon Alter
Commissioner of the Lions between the years 2014-2015
His motto: “Brotherhood in Action”
Amnon Alter was born in 1945 in Givatayim. In 1957 the family moved to Kibbutz Ramat Kobush. In 1972, Amnon moved to Beer Sheva – where he worked in the Dead Sea factories, until his retirement in 2003.
Amnon holds a master’s degree in social sciences from Beer Sheva University. Over the years, he volunteered at community television, Klalit Health Insurance Fund, “Soruka” Hospital, Israel Yaffe, Chaim Association and the Blind Club. He received the “Outstanding Volunteer Badge” from the Municipality of Beer Sheva.
Married to Edna and together they have 2 children and 3 granddaughters.
Edna and Amnon were among the founders of the Beer-Sheva club “Brotherhood in the Negev” in 2004.
Positions in the club: secretary, chairman of the members’ committee, member of the club’s management, chairman of the committee for the blind and visually impaired and member of various committees, the president of the club.
Positions in the commission: membership in commission committees, chairman of the committee for the blind and visually impaired, served twice as chairman of a district, chairman of the LCIF committee. Participated in a leadership seminar, in a mentoring seminar, guided in a Lions Israel leadership seminar, member of the committee preparing the seminar the leadership and the training of the officials.
Activity as commissioner:
At the world conference in Toronto, Canada, Amnon Alter was appointed as Lions Israel Commissioner for 2014-2015.
Immediately after the beginning of his term in July 2014, the “Tzuk Eitan” war broke out and all the activities of the Lions were diverted to help the communities surrounding Gaza and the south. Food packages were distributed to the needy, equipment for soldiers, groups from the south were hosted in the center of the country, games were distributed to kindergartens, and more.
In the community activities during the year – emphasis was placed on continuing to deepen the relationship between the clubs and the Commission, and strengthening the relationship and the warm and friendly atmosphere among the cabinet members.
Expansion of the “Lions Chef” project – addition of cities and clubs for activity and competition.
Empowerment of the “Lazy Eye” project.
Increasing the number of scholarships from the Rychwalsky Foundation for students, in exchange for volunteering hours in the community.
Establishing a public relations committee and collecting materials and ideas for advertising the Lions organization among the community – and a plan was prepared to produce a future film about the Lions.
Participating in the ward meetings, in social and community activities in the clubs, in various ceremonies and events – something done out of pride in the spirit of volunteering and doing a lot for the community and for social consolidation in the clubs.
At the People of the Year ceremony, the following received the award:* MK Amir Peretz – for his contribution to the advancement of security in Israel with the introduction of the Iron Dome for use in the IDF, and for his fight for society in Israel. * Professor Martynovitz – for his contribution to the advancement of medicine. * Leibovitz Foundation – for promoting the field of para-Olympic sports. * Orly and Guy – for their fight for society in Israel. * David Daur – for his contribution to the advancement of culture and poetry in Israel and abroad.
Participation in international activity:
International leadership seminar – in Ramat Rachel.
Participation in the European Forum in Stuttgart, Germany in 2005.
Participation in a trip to Poland with a delegation of Lions members from Israel, Germany, Poland, England and Sweden in 2005.
Participation in the European Forum in Bournemouth, England in 2006.
Participation in the European Forum in Bucharest, Romania in 2007.
Participation in a conference in Germany in 2013.
Responsible for the Israel Lions delegation at the European Forum in Birmingham, England, in 2014.
Participation in the Europe Forum in Augsburg, Germany in 2015.
Participation in a conference in Poland in 2015.
With the end of his position as commissioner, Amnon returned to activity in his club “Brotherhood in the Negev”, and to activity in commission committees.
And to sum up this year, Amnon says: In my term as commissioner, it was important to me to continue the activities of the commission, expand and deepen them, maintain a calm and pleasant atmosphere and deepen the relationship between the clubs, and between them and the commission. This is where my slogan comes from: “Working in brotherhood” which connects to the Lions’ slogan: “WE SERVE”. The camaraderie in giving to the community among the members of the Lions is huge and high quality, and the heart is filled with pride. Amazing friends, about whom Naomi Shemer probably wrote: “Good people in the middle of the road, very good people and you can walk with them.” I personally contributed no less than I contributed.
Martin Luther King said: “Anyone can be great because anyone can give, you don’t need a university degree, you don’t even need to make an effort – you just need a heart full of compassion and a soul full of love.”
Indeed, you were all members of the Lions. Without you it would not have been a calm and successful year.
